WKU - Weston Karate Union Championship May 2013

On Sunday 5th May 6 Khalsa squad members travelled to Weston-super-Mare to compete in the WKU Spring Open Invitational.

First to compete were Ciara and Florence who were both in the same category. Ciara fought very well attacking from the start with wins of 5-0 and 3-0 before losing 1-6 to an older and more experienced fighter but gaining a bronze medal for her efforts. Well done Ciara.

Florence had a bye in the first round but came up against a bigger opponent in the next round. This was a very close fight but Florence just lost out at 2-3. Well done Florence so close

Next up was Josh who had 18 boys in his category. Josh had a bye first round then stormed through the rounds winning 4-3, 0-0 with all 4 flags and 5-1 to get a well deserved gold. Josh looked strong and sharp, fantastic fighting Josh

Layla was up next. Although she fought well and took the lead 1-0, she picked up penalty points for contact and was disqualified in the last 10 seconds for backing off. This was a disappointing end to the fight for Layla but she should take heart that she kept the pressure on and matched her opponent. Well done Layla

Next was Tom who was in a very category of 37 boys. Tom has not fought competitively for a long time but came out strong winning the first round 4-0. Tom's next round was a much closer fight against a strong opponent that could have gone either way. On this occasion Tom just lost out 1-3 but Tom should be proud of his fighting, he performed admirably. Well done Tom

Last to compete was Fran who had been running round coaching everyone and now it was her turn to fight. In Fran's first fight she started slowly but after 20 seconds began to attack and blitzed her opponent to win 10-0. Fran's second fight was against a much taller and awkward fighter, again Fran started cautiously but managed to pick off her opponent to win 4-2. Fran's final fight was against a very talented fighter she has fought before. Fran secured a 3-0 lead by picking off her opponent but got caught with a head kick as she went in to attack in the last 10 seconds. The fight ended 3-3 but Fran was awarded all 4 flags to get our second gold of the day. Well done Fran

So Khalsa travelled home with 2 Gold's and a Bronze, well done to everyone for competing and supporting each other. Also a big thanks to Fran who warmed up and coached the squad.

Sensei Sat commented " This was a very big regular seasoned tournament that had much more experienced fighters than my B Squad faced before, so this was always going to be a hard day. I set goals for them all and didn't really expect them to get past the first round but was hoping they would and they did!!! For Josh this was a great result, straight back and a Gold and fought amazing!! Layla and Florence both had a tough day with Florence fighting a tough opponent and Layla winning but getting hansoku in the last 10 seconds is a learning curve, however they both performed fantastically!! For Ciara this was a fantastic result, second ever comp and second bronze medal!! Last up was Tom and Fran and for Tom this was his first comp in a long time as he has been practising for his grading.

That said he fought valiantly to win the first round and just losing the second. For Fran this was a great day and Fran showed her class, taking out her opponents precisely and cleanly, and the final which was a good fight against a very talented opponent!! I would firstly like to thank Debbie Hardcastle who organised the entries, coached and supported the team. Also to Fran Hardcastle who also coached and had to get herself ready whilst always putting the team first!! Lastly to the team who performed magnificently, and Richard for the pics at what seemed to be a very busy high standard comp!!"
