Yorkshire Open Championships 2012

Yorkshire Open Championships 2012Three of our Khalsa Champions squad members competed in the South Yorkshire Championships in Barnsley on Sunday 19th August, with Mo Sehra and Ant James coaching.

The competition proved to be highly competitive, with the judges not giving away much score. Techniques to the head were not generally recognised, so results remained tight.

Alex James was the first competitor to fight in the 9 to 10 yrs girls' open grade kumite. Alex fought a close first round with no score being awarded to either competitor. The contest went to a judges' decision on a 0/0 scoreline. Alex had unfortunately received the only warning of the fight, and the fight was awarded to her opponent on a split decision. A good effort Alex - you can't win them all!

Both Junior Williams and PJ Sehra competed in the 11-13 yrs boys' beginner to 4th kyu kumite. This was a highly competitive category. Junior fought a close first round but lost to the eventual winner on a 0/2 scoreline. A solid effort from Junior against a very strong opponent.

PJ won his first round 1/0 with a strong performance, and then progressed through his second round with a close 0/0 contest which PJ won on the judges' decision. PJ's next round saw him facing a Celtic giant. PJ put in a valiant effort but battled for reach, and ultimately lost the fight 0/5. Well done to PJ for winning his bronze medal in a very tough field!
The day involved a fair amount of travel, and it is great to see the commitment of our young squad members, even when results do not go their way.

Sensei Sat commented “I am very proud of what the small Junior squad did this weekend, even though we didn’t get the results, we did get the experience. All three students, performed very well and we must learn that no matter how hard we train some things are just not meant to be, and although all 3 members were happy with their performances, the scores didn’t go there way and we have to accept that!! My thanks goes to Anthony and Mo for coaching and Alex, Junior and Prabhjit for showing heart and courage!!” Well done team!!!!
