Essex Open Karate Championships Septmeber 2012

Sunday 29th September saw 2 members of Khalsa Champions travel to Clacton on Sea to compete in the Essex Open Championships.

This was the smallest team we had compete for a long time, as the other squad members had other commitments. That said the two members in Noah Allen and Sophie Santillo made up the medal tally for those that couldn't compete.

First up was Noah Allen who had a large category of two pools.
Noah made light work of his first two opponents who were mush smaller and younger taking the win 8-2 and 8-0.
Next up was Semi final in his pool and Noah took the win with a fantastic side kick throwing his opponent on the floor and the win 2-0, sending him through to the finals of his pool.
The Final of the first pool was very cagey and Noah scored first with a Jodan punch to the face. Our opponent was now waiting for Noah to rush in and pick off, which we didn't, and done enough to defend our win.
The winners of the second pool and Noah met in the final with both fighters capable of winning. Noah started the fight very aggressively and took the first 3 points, but lost 1 for contact to the face. Noah still pushing for the win pinched another point, and the win (4-1) and our first Gold of the day!! Well done Noah!!!

Next up was Sophie who was in 3 categories.
Sophie's first category was individual 16+ and Sophie took the first win 5-0 against a much taller opponent to send her to the final. The final's opening minute was fast and furious and points went either way, but Sophie's hand speed ensured the win 6-4 and Sophie's first gold of the day.

Sophies's second category (18+), we had the finalist of the the last category in the first round, and our opponent was out to take the win back and scored some great counters and the win (5-2) which meant Sophie had to settle for bronze in her second category.

Sophie's last category(18+) was against a much stronger and taller opponent but Sophie held here calm to take the win 8-0 sending her to the final. The final was the same opponent we met in the other two categories and this was the decider. Sophie set the pace very fast and took the lead 7-1 within in a minute, but with a comfortable lead Sophie tried a big technique and got caught with a kick (7-4). Sophie with still a comfortable lead went to finish the fight and got caught with a good hook kick to level the score 7-7. The fight intensified in the 30 seconds and Sophie scored first with a good technique to take the win 8-7 and her second Gold of the day!!! Well done Sophie.

Sensei Sat commented "To take 2 competitors and manage to walk away with 3 Golds and 1 Bronze out of a maximum 4 Golds is immense!! My goal for the guys this weekend was not the winning; it was the understanding and listening to their coach, and both fighters were exceptional in this area. This was the most encouraging aspect for me this weekend and our strategy worked perfectly. Well done both of you!! The club are really proud of what you have both achieved this weekend!!!" Big thanks goes to Chris and Claire for the transport and photos!!!
