EKKA - Ipswich April 2012

3 Competitors 3 Gold!

On Sunday, 15th April, Khalsa Champions travelled to Ipswich for the EKKA Tournament.

Due to a club grading happening on the day, and Sophie Santillo being off competing (and winning!) in Germany, only three competitors made the journey. Competing on the day were Noah Allen, Francesca Hardcastle and Prabjit Sehra. This tournament was a first for us, as were the new scoring and refereeing techniques being employed.

This tournament was organized slightly differently than we normally see, but it went smoothly and quickly with our last competitors finishing around 3PM.

Noah was up first and was in a non-age restricted category finding himself a bit small and younger than many of his opponents. Unfortunately Noah went out after his first fight, but it could have gone the other way. Noah will still benefit from this experience and be back stronger next time!

Next up was Prabjit, who also found himself a little undersized in his category. However, Prabjit managed a clever fight in the first round for a 6-4 win. In the second round, Prabjit had a tough fight and should have closed it out after sweeping and finishing, but it was not given. The fight ended 3-3 and PJ earned all the flags to go into the final. In the final, PJ cruised to a 6-0 victory with great techniques. Well done PJ, that was a great day!

Last, but not least was Francesca entering the Kyu and Blackbelt categories. In the Kyu bracket, Fran won the first round 6-4 and then dug deep for a second round 6-4 win. Fran then stepped up to finish out the group with a 6-0 victory. Great fighting! In the Blackbelt category there was only one other opponent. Fran carried over her sharpness and won quite comfortably for a 4-0 victory and a double gold day!

Sensei Sat commented “Firstly, I would like to thank all 3 competitors who travelled up to Ipswich to compete today. All three students have trained hard lately and we have been working on certain areas to help increase our weaknesses, and this is now proving good results. Well done to coaches Chris and Debbie who took the time off to take the small squad and coach them to the wins!! Well done from Sensei Sat and all at the club were very proud of you all!!
