Welsh Open Championships, Cardiff Sunday 26th September 2010

Welsh Open Championships, Cardiff Sunday 26th September 2010Wanting a change of scenery and only being made aware of this competition at very short notice-Cuba and Bleu Parris attended the Welsh Open Championships in Cardiff last Sunday.

With a very early start and the only squad members from Khalsa attending, the brothers knew they had to fly the flag for England and Khalsa Champions at the same time.

Bleu entered both disciplines as normal and Cuba competed in Kumite only. Bleu was up first in the Boys Open Grade 10-12yr Individual Kata category. He faced a relatively large group but being the professional that he is breezed through his three rounds without dropping a flag once! His polished performances of Bassai Dai, Godeshio and Anan saw him in the final to win that all important Gold medal and title of Welsh Open Champion of 2010, a very good start to the day!

It was then on to the Kumite and both Bleu and Cuba were working all out to get a hat trick where Gold medals were concerned. Cuba was up first in the Boys Under 12's Individual Kumite category in the minus 45kg group. As usual this was the busiest of the categories and Cuba had a large group of boys. Unfortunately for the other competitors in this group Cuba was firing on all cylinders and achieved four fantastic rounds with scores of 10-0, 9-0, 9-0, and 8-0 in the final without conceding a point once. He used some lovely techniques and also used some textbook perfect sweeps to his repertoire which he scored more than twice with sambons. Cuba deservedly took the Gold in this category, two Golds down-one to go!

Bleu was also very determined to get that last Gold medal and admittedly had a much easier category than Cuba due to the fact that half of his opponents in the group did not turn up! Despite this Bleu wanted to fight in the Boys Under 12's Individual Kumite category plus 45kg group and after a bye and then an 8-0 win joined his brother in the first place podium position with our third Gold of the day-well done boys you represented your club and association well.

A special mention must also go to Clare Bonello from SKA who helped and supported the boys through the day as Sensei Sat had other commitments, so a big thank you to her.

Also to the organizers of this event for their welcoming attitude and hospitality that was shown towards us.
Sensei Sat commented "The Boys are now starting to take their kumite and kata to a different level, winning all their international competitions and making this another to their long list of wins this year. I feel very proud of their achievements this weekend!! Keep up the good work guys. Well done from all the Club and your very proud Sensei!!!!"
