Jack Wins Double Gold at Meopham Open 2009

Jack Newey (14) entered two kata categories at the Meopham Open on Sunday 10th May.

In his first category, the 15 yrs and under, mixed kata, Jack performed Unshu to qualify for the semi finals with joint top marks. The semi finals are judged on flags and he was up against Steve Karwacinski from Ishinryu who being 15 is a very good and experienced exponent of Shotokan katas. Jack going first performed an excellent Suparinpei to win 3-0 and go into the Final.

He had to take on Steve's sister, Kate, in the final who recently became an England international.

Jack chose to Chatanyara Kushanku and again going first won 2-1 against Kate's shotokan Unsu..

Having won his own category he was allowed to enter the Cadets kata and as there was not a particularly large entry he did one kata Suparinpei that saw off all the opposition.

Jack is in training for the first round of selections on May 31st in Birmingham to represent England in kata at the World Championships in Morocco in November. This double win was just the boost he needed!
